2nd International Work Conference on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction

Content:

This is the report of the Second Work Conference on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction, held in The Hague, the Netherlands, in June 2005. 150 persons from more than 35 countries, representing a wide variety of civil society organisations, scientific institutes, private sector and policy makers in the area of climate change and disaster riskreduction came together. In several ways, the conference marked a transition. Over the past few years, the strong linkages between disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and development have received a lot more recognition, mainly at the policy level. Negotiators in the context of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, development agencies and international organisations all recognise the need for bottom-up planning to reduce therisks of climate change, starting with current vulnerability to natural hazards. We are now in a period of transition, where increasing attention needs to be translated into concrete programmes and better integration of climate risk reduction in development plans and programmes.
